What is GATA?

GraduAction Talent Academy (GATA)

is a structured programme designed for final year undergraduate students to equip them with the necessary knowledge and transferable skills for their graduate employability and career development. Students will also receive training on professional soft skills so that they excel in the workplace after graduation.

GATA consists of TWO modules to be taught by a combination of online lectures/seminars/workshops in the 1st semester and 2nd semester. Student enrolment can be accepted for either or both modules.

Participants who successfully complete one module will be awarded a certificate and be eligible to apply for ONE credit in the Credit Award Scheme for Out-of-classroom Learning Experiences.

Objectives of GATA

  • Support final year undergraduate students to enhance employability skills and make informed career choices by taking into account the graduate labour market and their knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Strengthen students' critical thinking and professional soft skills in the context of employability and career development through the use of case study and real-life examples

​At the end of GATA, participants will be:

  • Skilful in the use of professional techniques in job searching and recruiting process

  • Aware of work etiquette in business and professional practice

  • Able to excel in the workplace and career of choice at graduation

  • Awarded a certificate as proof of the professional skills acquired

  • Eligible to apply for ONE credit (upon successful completion of one module) in the Credit Award Scheme for Out-of-classroom Learning Experiences through HKU Horizons Office

Module Focus
& Hours

  • Module I (1st semester) focuses on self-awareness and job searching techniques; Module II (2nd semester) focuses on professional soft skills for workplace success 

  • Each module consists of 12 hours of lecturing, seminar, and/or workshop in the form of 6 online classes (2 hours each)

  • Another 8-10 hours of direct reading, diagnostics, activities, and interactive exercises are expected from participating students​ in each module

  • All final year undergraduate students who will graduate in 2021 are eligible to enrol

  • Students can choose to enrol in either or both modules; enrolment will be accepted before the start of each module

  • Successful completion is based on attendance (80% requirement for each module) and submission of required exercises and assignments

Understanding recruitment and selection processes – career talk, networking, CV, interview

  • To understand recruitment and selection processes

  • To become familiar with the main methods used by recruiters

  • To learn how to use the STAR technique in selection methods including application forms, cover letter, and CV

Development of skills and tools to demonstrate effective
self-presentation: techniques and practice to excel at interviews

  • To understand the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication for the selection process

  • To learn how to prepare and excel at interviews (one-to-one, group/panel, Skype and phone interviews) using the STAR & FREE technique

Activity: Review video clips on interviews with prospective employers, review interview questions using STAR & FREE framework

*Students can indicate their choice of class in the enrolment form. There is a quota set for each class.
  No change of class is allowed after confirmation.

Enrolment for Module I

Notes for Enrolment:

  • All the classes in Module I will be conducted online by Zoom in English.

  • Only final year undergraduate students graduating in 2021 will be accepted.

  • You can indicate your choice of class in the enrolment form according to your schedule in the 1st semester.

  • You will receive a confirmation email if your enrolment is accepted. No change of class is allowed once you receive the confirmation email.

  • Enrolment is on a first-come-first-served basis. When the quota is full for either or both classes, the corresponding class option or the enrolment form will be closed.

  • The Zoom link and class details will be provided to enrolled participants through email.

  • Please make sure you fulfil the completion requirement (80% attendance and submission of exercises/assignments) to be eligible for the certificate and one credit in the Credit Award Scheme for Out-of-classroom Learning Experiences.

  • Enrolled participants who fail to complete Module I may be put in a lower priority for Module II enrolment.

  • As quota is limited, you are encouraged to enrol as soon as possible.
